The legend of a fantastic tennis player, René Lacoste, a member of the famous French "Musketeers" Davis Cup Team and a star of the courts at Wimbledon, Forest Hills and Roland Garros.

 

The true story of "the Crocodile" dates back to 1927. René Lacoste liked to recount how this nickname came about and ultimately became a brand of worldwide renown.

 

“I was nicknamed "the Crocodile" by the American press, after I made a bet with the captain of the French Davis Cup Team. The public must have been fond of this nickname which conveyed the tenacity I displayed on the tennis courts, never letting go of my prey.”

 

In 1933, René Lacoste founded a company to manufacture the perfect tennis shirt. The original “1212” pique polo shirt featured the now legendary embroidered crocodile on the left breast - Lacoste was born and revolutionised sportswear and branding within sport.

Key purpose of job

 

To create compelling product design solutions for the Lacoste consumer. Responsible for delivering consumer led global product designs which align to the brand DNA and seasonal creative direction. Collaborate across multiple areas to gain alignment and engagement.

 

Research:

  • Actively research the market and trends, looking further than immediate scope of work and produce detailed reports following each research visit 
  • Through research provide visual context for each given brief and material pack development.
  • Contribute to the creation of seasonal creative direction, trend overviews, colour and mood boards.

Design & Development

  • Push creative boundaries whilst delivering against commercial opportunities  
  • Deliver consumer focused designs aligned against the category and/or range direction & product KPIS.
  • Ensure own designs have a coherent and compelling offer that seamlessly merchandise with the other product categories and ranges. 
  • Create inspiring mood boards for briefs to visualise the concept for communication to category management teams.
  • Create appropriate colour & material palettes. Apply colours, materials and trims in an impactful way and in line with the seasonal themes and product category direction.
  • Conceptualise new footwear designs in line with Lacoste DNA from ideation sketching through to final computer rendering and application of colour & materials.
  • Deliver coloured CAD's which are consumer focused, trend led and commercial designs aligned with allocated category merchandising 
  • Deliver designs in a clear and concise format and present at design reviews, with detailed renderings and technical specifications in the required format in Photoshop and/or Illustrator
  • Ensure all product designs adhere to legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with development team on product execution and factory capability and deliver aesthetic set against technical capability.
  • Work on new last & outsole tooling developments with the guidance of senior members of the design and development/fitting team.
  • Create tech packages and strike-offs for all new creation and proactively follow the execution of all product details, including construction, colour, and material.
  • Provide accurate artwork for Sample Request Form creation for new seasonal product utilised by factories to build models accurately.
  • Responsible for making amendments to new seasonal models up to SMS stage and updating all artwork in a timely manner for reviews and supporting documentation.
  • Actively participate in proto reviews ensuring design integrity is maintained through to final sign-off  
  • Contributes towards cost saving solutions to achieve seasonal margin target whilst retaining creativity 
  • Support Innovation and Development Team to deliver design and colour specifications on time and at key stage gates in the product creation process  
  • Maintain communication with line managers throughout the process ensuring your message is clearly understood 
  • Responsible for delivering allocated workload on time & against the seasonal C2C deadlines

 

Needs to have

 

  • Educated to degree level or similar experience, preferably within Sports, Fashion or Product Design or a related field or area 
  • Proven Design experience in a lifestyle brand aligned to the Lacoste Brand or category you’ll be working on 
  • Consumer focused with a strong technical bias within their given design specialism 
  • Strong creative and trend skills, with a proven commercial background 
  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, plus excellent freehand drawing and rendering skills. Knowledge of Excel an advantage 
  • Proven ability to work within a critical path and meet deadlines, managing time efficiently to achieve completion of a professional standard of work 
  • Very organised, structured and comfortable working with a minimum of supervision towards meeting short-term and long-term objectives 
  • Collaborates effectively to maintain and develop trustful relationships with peers across the business or multiple functions and within the product team   
  • Ability to work across multiple functions with experience of working in a matrix structure a benefit  
  • Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills  
  • Communicates with enthusiasm  
  • The ability to travel and spend time away from home
