LACOSTE is above all a legend


The legend of a fantastic tennis player, René Lacoste, a member of the famous French "Musketeers" Davis Cup Team and a star of the courts at Wimbledon, Forest Hills and Roland Garros.


The true story of "the Crocodile" dates back to 1927. René Lacoste liked to recount how this nickname came about and ultimately became a brand of worldwide renown.


“I was nicknamed "the Crocodile" by the American press, after I made a bet with the captain of the French Davis Cup Team. The public must have been fond of this nickname which conveyed the tenacity I displayed on the tennis courts, never letting go of my prey.”


In 1933, René Lacoste founded a company to manufacture the perfect tennis shirt. The original “1212” pique polo shirt featured the now legendary embroidered crocodile on the left breast - Lacoste was born and revolutionised sportswear and branding within sport.

Job Purpose


Working under the direction of the Design Manager, lead the design team through the concept to consumer process, while providing creative solutions both commercially and creatively driven.






  • Influence and motivate the greater team with a sense of urgency ensuring overall performance is consistent with the business magnitude.
  • Support Design Manager through acting up in their absence and providing directional solutions.
  • Conduct personal appraisals with direct reports bi-annually to challenge, influence and shape the individuals in a positive way that is in line with the direction of the business.
  • Responsible for coaching at least one direct report across design techniques, technical aspects, colour & material and presence & impact.
  • Manage against the critical path to ensure deadlines are met from concept to confirmation samples.
  • In collaboration with Design manager, lead design presentations ensuring information is clearly provided to management and cross-functional teams.
  • Support and empower designers to present and articulate design proposals and solutions in review meetings.
  • Liaise with Design, Development and Category teams throughout the product creation cycle.



  • Research relevant areas of the market place seasonally to gather insights into consumers, cultures, markets, competitor product, colour & material and emerging trends.
  • Provide detailed reports following each research trip that inspires and quantifies the findings.
  • Leverage style sites such as WGSN to strengthen the product creation process through to final designs.
  • Continuously gather consumer insights to serve as an expert for the Product & Marketing team.
  • Focussed research for every brief or material pack, looking into competitive landscape, construction, details, and pricing to show an understanding of each brief.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to create commercial product ranges across Men’s, Women’s and Children’s that is in line with the range direction from concept to reality.
  • Collaborate with Design Manager to develop seasonal creative strategies in order to ensure that products inspire key consumers and lead the business forward.
  • Conceptualise new footwear designs in line with Lacoste DNA from research, freehand sketching, final computer rendering to application of Colour & Materials.
  • Create seasonal range build based on the line plan and creative direction.
  • Apply agreed brand codes for the season in clear stories across the collection.
  • Select & create seasonal colour & materials palettes based on colour principles, research and alignment with Lacoste Paris.
  • Maintain and update core colour & materials palettes.
  • In collaboration with Development, action and approve lab dips, ensuring colour matching is accurate and consistent.
  • Collaborate with assigned Development team on product execution/factory capability push boundaries where possible.
  • Create and/or Overview all new outsole developments, semi technical drawings, signing off blue prints and 3d prints.
  • Work on all new last developments.
  • Attend and hold regular design step check meetings to ensure briefs are being explored and to critique design work so that the best solutions are found for each brief.
  • Create and oversee teams final Sample Request Forms and tech packages while proactively following the execution of all product details, including construction, colour, material and trims.
  • Create and populate Sample Request Forms for new seasonal product utilised by factories to build models accurately.
  • Ensure all product designs adhere to legal requirements.
  • Carry out seasonal development trips to the Asia factory network to follow up on submitted projects while simultaneously refining working practices.
  • To work in conjunction with the Development and Category team to ensure all product creations adhere to set prices.
  • Challenge the status quo of creative strategies and product through the avenue of design.
  • Ownership of all changes on new and carryover products up to SMS stage.



  • Communicate clearly, often and consistently verbally and in writing.
  • Collaborate cross functionally with Category and Development throughout the product creation process.
  • Work closely with Development in UK and Asia to ensure a smooth flow of information in regards to construction issues.
  • Encourages optimistic and positive responses to challenges and tough messages.
