As Business Solutions Manager your role will be:

  • To engage and build relationships with key business stakeholders & Exec members within the Consumer function (inc, Marketing, Digital, Innovation, comms, Data & Insights) and becoming a trusted ally who can help take the business forward to meet its goals.
  • To provide thought leadership to global business-IT strategy for the finance, HR & legal functions. This includes partnering with the business using internal & external commercial knowledge and insight to define business solutions & innovation opportunities for Pentland Brands across the finance, HR & legal functions and ensuring that the overall IT and business process landscape for the finance, HR & legal functions are well architected.
  • Own architecture for the finance, HR & legal functions and orchestrate the creation of the IT transformation roadmap which aligns to the business transformation roadmap.
  • Validate all change initiatives required by the finance, HR & legal functions to ensure alignment to both IT transformation roadmap and commercial goals of the organisation.
  • Build a high calibre team with clear development plans and succession planning.
  • To lead and manage the business solutions team for the finance, HR & legal functions, including managing careers, developing skills and coordinating their activities.
  • To work as part of the IT extended management team to recognise, define and deliver commercially important initiatives. This is to include recognising the value of on-going (new) technology developments and raising awareness of how they can add commercial value to Pentland within area of responsibility.
  • To be an advocate of Group IT’s ways of working, helping define them and ensuring that they are used by all relevant parties.


Commercial business engagement


  • To help the IT team to be seen as a trusted ally by the finance, HR & legal functions.
  • Having a broad and deep (enough) understanding of key business processes and commercial ways of working within the finance, HR & legal functions to be able to work with key business stakeholders and IT team members.
  • Being personally engaged with key (most likely senior) stakeholders within the finance, HR & legal functions for whom IT provide solutions.
  • Supporting members of the business solutions team in creating their own relationships with key business stakeholders within finance, HR & legal functions.
  • Building and maintaining own knowledge of the ‘outside of Pentland world’, to understand what other organisations within, and outside, our industry are doing and how that could be applied to existing or as yet unseen (by the business) value creating opportunities.


Business/IT strategy


  • To be able to take business needs across the finance, HR & legal functions and architect business solutions & supporting business cases that enables business outcomes to be successfully delivered.
  • This part of the role requires the BusSol Manager to coordinate the architecture activities for the finance, HR & legal functions and support the HoBS in defining & maintaining the overall enterprise architecture for Pentland.
  • To ensure appropriate solution vendors are selected to support the business solutions for the finance, HR & legal functions and strategic relationships are subsequently managed.


Business solutions team management


  • To ensure that the business solutions team for the finance, HR & legal functions are led through a clear sense of direction and is able to recognise its contribution to Pentland’s finance, HR & legal functions.
  • To ensure that the team level below the Bus Sol manager is strong and meets the ongoing business need.
  • Ensure strong and clear delegation to the team.


Member of IT extended management team


  • To contribute to the overall IT strategy for the finance, HR & legal functions and to ensure that it is focussed on maximising the contribution that IT can make to Pentland.
  • Conducts self in line with Pentland positive culture and values.
  • Be respectful as well as respected (albeit primarily to their peers and reports/juniors).


Delivering the basics

  • To ensure that all basic IT disciplines are well defined and then delivered by the IT team.



                         What you need to have


  • Experience within an IT Management role, providing external face of IT into the business and implicitly understands the impact of services on business strategy, change agenda and normal operations
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to conceptualise and think outside the box
  • Ability to transform a big-picture / strategic vision into a manageable business solution road-map based on business outcomes
  • Experience of working in partnership with senior stakeholders to architect solutions that achieve the expected business outcomes.     
  • Ability to challenge/influence the business strategy, business case & business requirements
  • Strong financial controls and disciplines, proven experience with Business case and ROI creation, budget management, forecasting, tracking and reporting
  • Experience and knowledge of the capital investment evaluation process, including cost/benefit analysis and estimating cost/resources for both defined & undefined initiatives
  • A high-level understanding of the industry in which Pentland operates, including the expected business processes, in order to be able to have appropriately detailed conversations with key (more senior) stakeholders.
  • A high-level understanding of the main IT solutions that Pentland uses, to be able to have appropriately detailed conversations with key (more senior) stakeholders.
  • Experience of managing a global team and ensuring the team meets their deliverables.
  • A good understanding of what is happening ‘in the Broader world’ re: technology, and what organisations are doing from a ‘trend’ perspective (and why).

 Key Stakeholders: 

  • Stakeholder management at all levels is a key success factor for this role – internal stakeholder management (within Pentland IT) and external stakeholder management (wider global business, third party vendors) require demonstrable skills and a flexible yet robust mindset
  • Exec members, Leadership team & Key functional owners within the Finance (Inc. Brand/Divisional Finance, Functional Finance, Group Finance, Management Accounting, Finance Shared Services, Tax & Treasury – in all markets), HR & Legal function
  • Senior members of the Pentland Group Finance Leadership Teams
  • Pentland IT Senior Leadership Team & Extended Management
  • Solution Delivery & Service Delivery functions (more importantly the Systems of Record, Systems of Engagement and Data & Insights Teams)
  • External vendors, strategic/innovation partners and architects
